Risen Energy has signed a renewable power purchase agreement (PPA) with BHP for its Solar Farm to supply up to of the electricity needs at BHP's Nickel West refinery. The PPA included with BHP will run for ten years from February , with an option for a further extension. The deal will help BHP reduce emissions from refinery electricity use by up to based on fiscal year levels. This will effectively displace an estimated of CO2 between and . This is the equivalent of removing combustion engine cars from WA roads each year. This is the first renewable energy purchase PPA signed by BHP in WA and follows renewable PPAs covering BHP operations in Queensland in and in Chile in . The contract will contribute to BHP's medium-term scientific objective of reducing scope and emissions.
Competitively priced clean energy will be supplied by Risen Energy's solar farm, Western Australia's largest complete solar installation with an output of GWh of electricity per year. As owners of Solar Farm, Risen Energy (Australia) progressed the project from financing, detailed Phone Number List engineering design to construction, commissioning and operation. “Risen Energy is proud to sign this renewable energy purchase PPA with BHP’s Nickel West. This agreement will strengthen Western Australia's current and future renewable projects. We look forward to welcoming many more clean energy partnerships to boost Western Australia’s manufacturing, mineral processing and other industries,” said John Zhong, Deputy Managing Director of Risen Energy (Australia).
BHP Nickel West Asset President Eddy said: “This contract will further increase the sustainability of the nickel produced by Nickel West. It will reduce the refinery's electricity emissions by 50%, diversify our energy supply and reduce the refinery's electricity bill by up to . “Nickel is a future-oriented product and sustainable nickel production is essential to meet future demand. This contract, the sulfide nature of our nickel deposits and our integrated value chain increase our position as one of the lowest carbon-intensive nickel miners in the world said. Western Australia Minister for Mines and Petroleum, Energy, Bill Johnston, congratulated the BHP Nickel West team for taking the step forward to reduce the operation's carbon footprint.
