New York City is replacing all street lights ( approximately 300,000 bulbs) with LEDs and expects to complete the project by 2019 , reducing street light energy consumption by 35% .
Margaret Newman , chief of staff for the New York City Department of Transportation , told GreenBiz that the installation in Central Park is complete and about 1,500 lights have been converted to LED , with the city expected to save about $ 250,000 per year and save about 700,000 kilowatts of electricity.
GreenBiz reports that since the city launched its LED street lighting project in 2009 , the cost of LEDs has dropped significantly, almost equaling the cost of replacing some lamps.
Due to the lower costs and energy savings , the city Telegram Number Data expects a payback period of five to seven years. If LEDs reduce energy consumption by 30% to 50% as expected, the city will save approximately $ 15 million annually. By the end of 2014 , New York City will have spent $ 11 million to install approximately 34,000 LED street lights. By 2017 , an additional 200,000 HPS fixtures will be equipped with LEDs at an additional cost of $ 80 million.
Other cities that have switched to LED streetlights or are moving in this direction include San Francisco, San Antonio , Texas, Austin , Texas, and Montreal , Canada .
Deutsche Bank said it has completed about 80 projects in the past few years , reducing electricity consumption in New York by 18.3 million kilowatt-hours per year , or about a quarter. The bank said the company recently installed 682 solar panels on the roof of its New York office , which will reduce CO2 emissions by 100 tons per year. In 2009 , the company installed a 250- kilowatt- hour solar panel on the roof of its Piscataway, New Jersey, office.
Five other companies have pledged to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from their New York City offices by 30%.
participating in the Carbon Challenge , four universities and one hospital have already achieved their targets . Barnard College, the Fashion Institute of Technology, New York University, Rockefeller University and New York Queens Hospital reduced emissions by an average of 33.3% and reduced energy use by 22% . Last year alone , the agencies reduced carbon dioxide emissions by 86,000 tons and saved $ 19 million through lower energy costs , the mayor's office said.
The Fashion Institute of Technology became the first university to achieve its Carbon Challenge targets and continues the initiative with the installation of a second green roof . Through thermal power plants , energy efficiency projects and campus -wide engagement initiatives , NYU achieved its goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 30 percent in 2011 , six years ahead of its 2017 commitment date. The country currently aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2016.
